The Tax Assessor is responsible for Property Assessment, Ratio, and Equalized Valuation. The Assessor assesses property according to a standard measure of property, namely the true market value.

The property assessment value is what a buyer would be willing to pay; not the open market value. The assessor only assesses a home if a change occurs or it’s reassessed if the town reassessed.

The Morristown Tax Rate for 2007 is $2.28 per $100 of assessed value. (2008 tax rate determined in the summer, 2008)

The town of Morristown had a town wide reassessment in 2004.

New Owners - property ownership cannot be changed until a recorded deed is received from the Morris County Clerk by the Tax Assessor. Usually takes four weeks from date deed is sent for recording.

New Jersey Senior "Freeze" - program is administered by New Jersey Division of Taxation. Call 1-800-882-6597 for more information.

Senior Citizen Property Tax Deduction is $250 per year. Income (including spouse's income) cannot exceed $10,000 per year, not including Social Security or Federal, State, County or Municipal Government pension. (form)

Veteran Property Tax Exemption is $250 per year. Must have active wartime service and copy of Form DD214 (honorable discharge). (form)
